Berlin Township Fire Department is comprised of volunteer firefighters, paramedics and EMTs ready to serve and protect our community as well as assist in communities outside of Berlin Township. The department proudly operates and maintains 8 apparatuses for use in fire fighting, rescue and extrication, emergency medical response, and water rescue.

On January 1, 2020 Steve Barnhouse became the Chief of Berlin Township Fire Department. Steve has been a member of the fire department for 16 years serving as a Junior Firefighter and than obtained his Firefighter II and EMT-B. Steve has held several roles during his time at the fire department including Captain and Assistant EMS Chief.

Ryan Payne

Assistant chief


Ryan started his emergency services career as an EMT in the Pittsburgh area in 1992 and began his fire service career in 1997. Ryan was the past Vice President and Captain for the Avalon Volunteer Fire Company.

Ryan has been a member of the Berlin Township Fire Department since January 2013. Prior to his appointment as Assistant Chief, Ryan served as Fire Lieutenant.

Nick has been a member of the fire department since July of 2010 prior to his appointment as Captain, he served as EMS Lieutenant since 2018. He is a Firefighter II, Paramedic, and an Instructor for both Fire and EMS.

Berlin Township Fire Department’s members each hold certifications in one or more the following areas: Firefighting, Paramedic, Advanced EMT, and EMT.
